A Bird

A bird came down the walk,
He did not know I saw;
He bit an angleworm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw.
And then he drank a dew
From a convenient grass,
And then hopped sidewise to the wall
To let a beetle pass.
Bird Poems
by Emily Dickinson

Bird Feeder

Here is the bird feeder. Here, seeds and crumbs.
Sprinkle them on and see what comes.
One cardinal, one chickadee, one junco, one jay.
Four of my bird friends are eating today.

Birds

This is the way we scratch for worms.
This is the way we peck for our food.
This is the way we sit on our eggs.
This is the way we flap our wings.
This is the way we fly away.

Birds

Blue birds,
Yellow birds,
White birds,
Black birds,
Any kind of bird.
I like birds.

Cute birds.
Ugly birds.
Poor birds,
Hungry birds,
Born birds,
Sleeping birds.
I like birds!

A bird in a tree
A bird in a birdhouse
A bird in a cage
A bird in a house
I like birds!

For a Bird

I found him lying near the tree;
I folded up his wings.
Oh, little bird,
You never heard
The song the summer sings.
I wrapped him in a shirt I wore in winter;
it was blue.
Oh, little bird,
You never heard
The song I sang to you.

by Myra Cohn Livingstone

Early Bird

Oh, if you're a bird, be an early bird
And catch the worm for your breakfast plate.
If you're a bird, be an early early bird-
But if you're a worm, sleep late.

by Shel Silverstein

Feed the Birds (tune of Row Row)

Feed, feed, feed the birds
In the wintertime
When the days are dark and cold
Food is hard to find
Feed, feed, feed the birds
Till the spring has come
Scatter birdseed on the snow
Feeding birds is fun.

If I Were A Bird

If I were a bird, I'd sing a song
And fly about the whole day long
And when the night comes, go to rest,
Up in my cozy little nest.

by Jackie Silberg

In the Beginning

In the beginning, when the earth was new,
birds had no feet but only flew.
When they crashed upon their nose,
Mother Nature gave them toes.
Then they dined standing on the beach,
catching all the fish within their reach.
And when they fought for fish to eat,
Mother Nature stretched their feet.
"Nobody here can fall asleep!
So, you long-legged birds, fish in the deep.
Short-legged birds, fish near the shore,
And stop that fighting! You hear? No more!"

by Frank Asch

Little Bird

I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop
So I said to the bird, won't you stop, stop, stop
And was going to the window, to say how do you do,
When he shook his little tail, and far away he flew.

Little Bird

This little bird flaps its wings
Flaps its wings, flaps its wings
This little bird flaps its wings
And flies away in the morning.

by Sarah Williams

Little Bird (tune of Up On The Housetop)

Most of the birds have gone away
On this cold, dark winter's day
But here is one bird I can see
Looking for something to eat
Little bird, I'll feed you
Till the cold, winter's through
And all your friends come back to play
On some bright and warm spring day.

Little Birds

All the little birds are asleep in their nest.
All the little birds are taking a rest.
They do not even twitter, they do not even tweet.
Everything is quiet up and down the street.
Then came the mother bird and tapped them on the head.
They opened up one little eye and this is what was said,
"Come little birds, it's time to learn to fly,
Come little birds, fly away up in the sky."
Fly, fly, oh fly away, fly, fly, fly
Fly, fly, oh fly away, fly away so high.
Fly, fly, oh fly away, birds can fly the best.
Fly, fly, oh fly away, now fly back to your nest.

Little Birds

One little bird with lovely feathers blue
Sat beside another one. Then there were two.
Two little birds singing in the tree
Another came to join them. Then there were three.
Three little birds wishing there were more
Along came another bird. Then there were four.
Four little birds glad to be alive,
Found another lonely friend. Then there were five.
Five little birds just as happy as can be
Five little birds singing songs for you and me.

Magpie

Magpie they call me
Though I know no reason why
For I am handsome and clever
And I never never lie.
Legend tells of other birds
Asking me to teach them
How to build a nest.
When I began to show them
They said they knew best.
This is why I live in a nest
With a sheltering roof and a view -
And other bird's nests are like mine -
but cut in two.

Shirley Wishart

Preening

Preening every day,
what a chore!
Wing up,
leg out,
tuck,
twist,
and stretch.
Preening every day,
what a bore!
Wing down,
leg in,
bend,
reach,
and nibble.
Preening every day
is the price we pay
to crouch,
spring,
and soar!
Flying day and night,
what a delight!

by Frank Asch

Pretty Birds

One pretty, two pretty,
Three pretty birds.
Four pretty, five pretty,
Six pretty birds.
Seven pretty, eight pretty,
Nine pretty birds,
Sitting in a tree.

Stretch, Stretch

Stretch, stretch away up high:
On your tiptoes, reach the sky.
See the bluebirds flying high.
Now bend down and touch your toes.
Now sway as the the North Wind blows.
Waddle as the gander goes!

To the Sunny South

Four little birds all huddled together.
The first one said, "My, what cold weather."
The second one said, "The sky is getting grey."
The third one said, "Let's fly away."
The fourth little bird never opened his mouth.
So they all flew away to the sunny south.

Two Little Birds

High, high, high up in the sky
The little birds fly
Down, down, down in the nest
With a wing on the left
With a wing on the right
They sleep and they sleep
All through the night.

Bluebird, Bluebird

Bluebird, bluebird
Through my window.
Bluebird, bluebird
Through my window.
Bluebird, bluebird
Through my window
Oh, Johnny, I'm tired.

The Blue Jay

The Blue Jay is a noisy bird
But a very handsome sight
He wears a sky-blue jacket
Striped and patched with
Grey, black and white.
He's often called a rascal
By all the other birds;
For he likes to tease and scare and chase
And always loves to be heard.
He lives here in the summer time
And in the winter too.
So don't forget to leave a treat,
And he'll be sure to knock,
"Thank You!"

Chickadees

Five little chickadees sitting in a door
One flew away and then there were four.
Four little chickadees sitting in a tree.
One flew away and then there were three.
Three little chickadees looking at you.
One flew away and then there were two.
Two little chickadees sitting in the sun.
One flew away and then there was one.
One little chickadee sitting all alone.
He flew away and then there were none.

The Chickadees

Four little chickadees, sitting in a tree;
One flew away and then there were three.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.

Three little chickadees don't know what to do;
One flew away and then there were two.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.

Two little chickadees sitting in the sun;
One flew away and then there was one.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.

One little chickadee can't have any fun;
He flew away, and then there were none.
Chickadee, chickadee, happy and gay,
Chickadee, chickadee, fly away.

Five Old Crows

Five old crows were on a brick wall.
Four were tall and the other was small.
One old crow cried, "Caw, caw, caw!"
He went to visit his mother-in-law.

Four old crows were on a brick wall.
Three were tall and the other was small.
One old crow went to get some food.
He never came back to the other brood.

Three old crows were on a brick wall.
Two were tall and the other was small.
The small one grew and grew and grew.
He flew away and that left two.

Two old crows were on a brick wall.
Both were old and both of them tall.
One crow said, "I miss my son."
He flew away and that left one.

One old crow was on a brick wall.
He flew away and there was the wall!
One brick wall was alone in the rain,
Wishing for the crows to come back again.

I Sometimes Think

I sometimes think I'd rather crow
And be a rooster than to roost
And be a crow. But I don't know.

A rooster he can roost also,
Which doesn't seem fair when crows can't crow.
Which may help some. But I don't know.

Crows should be glad of one thing, though;
Nobody thinks of eating crow,
While roosters they are good enough
For anyone unless they're tough.

There are lots of tough old roosters, though.
And anyway a crow can't crow,
So maybe roosters stand more show.
It looks that way. But I don't know.

The Crow

"Caw, caw!" says the crow
As he hides in the corn.
"You won't see me,
'Till early Sunday morn.
I'll eat all your corn
Then fly away.
Say good-bye to Mr. Scarecrow
And be on my way."

by Vera Trembach

Ostrich

Here is the ostrich straight and tall
Nodding his head above us all
Here is the hedgehog prickly and small
Rolling himself into a ball
Here is the spider, scuttling around
Treading so lightly on the ground
Here are the birds that fly so high
Spreading their wings across the sky
Here are the children fast asleep
And in the night the owls do peep
Tuit tuwhoo, tuit tuwhoo.

Ostrich

An ostrich has two long legs
And can lay many large eggs
She's the largest of all the birds
And she can't fly. Isn't that absurd?

The Ostrich is a Silly Bird

The ostrich is a silly bird,
With scarcely any mind.
He often runs so very fast,
He leaves himself behind.

And when he gets there, has to stand
And hang about till night,
Without a blessed thing to do
Until he comes in sight.

by Mary E. Wilkens Freeman

An Unassuming Owl

An unassuming owl,
having little else to do,
remarked within the darkness
a discreet and subtle "WHOOOOOOOOOOO!"
A self-important owl,
puffed and pompous in the gloom,
responded with an overblown
and condescending "WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!"

by Jack Prelutsky

Four Little Owls

This little owl has great, round eyes.
This little owl is of very small size.
This little owl can turn her head.
This little owl likes mice, she said.
This little owl flies all around,
And her wings hardly make a single sound.

Five Little Owls

Five little owls in the old elm tree
Fluffy and puffy as owls could be
Blinking and winking with big round eyes
At the big round moon that hung in the skies
As I passed underneath I could hear one say
"There'll be mouse for supper, there will today."
Then all of them hooted, "Tu-whit, tu-whoo!"
Yes, mouse for supper, hoo hoo, hoo hoo.

Sh! Little Mouse

An owl has eyes so shiny bright
They see right through the black of night.

His feathers are so soft and small
You cannot hear him fly at all.

His ears are sharp... be careful, Mouse,
Go softly when you leave your house.

Don't creak the door or squeak your shoe
Or Mr. Owl will pounce on you!

by Aileen Fisher

The Owl

An owl perched at night in the branch of a tree.
Whoo, whoo. (moderately)

He was watching the stars in the sky, quietly.
Whoo, whoo. (whisper)

Far off in the woods he could hear a slight noise.
Whoo, whoo. (softly, questioningly)

Then, some voices came closer; some girls and some boys.
Whoo, whoo. (clearly)

He could hear someone say, "I'm not afraid here."
Whoo, whoo. (two tones, descending)

And another voice answered, "There's nothing to fear."
Whoo, whoo. (two tones, ascending)

And the owl quite agreed, And wanted to say...
Whoo, whoo. (hooting)

His greeting was meant in the friendliest way.
Whoo, whoo. (softly)

The group who heard the hoot; to them it held dread...
Whoo, whoo. (loudly)

Coming at night from the tree overhead.
Whoo, whoo. (drawn-out)

So they ran back home, as fast as could be.
Whoo, whoo. (quickly)

And the owl sat alone, in the branch of the tree.
Whoo, whoo. (quietly)

by Gloria T. Delamar

The Owl

The owl is wary, the owl is wise.
He knows all the names of the stars in the skies.
He hoots and he toots and he lives by his wits,
But mostly he sits... (and he sits... and he sits).

by Jack Prelutsky

The Owl and the Brownies

An owl sat alone on the branch of a tree,
And he was as quiet as quiet could be.
It was night and his eyes were round like this
He looked all around; not a thing he did miss.
Some brownies crept up on the branch of the tree,
And they were as quiet as quiet could be
Said the wise old owl, "To-whoooooo, to-whooooo."
Up jumped the brownies and away they flew.
An owl sat alone on the branch of a tree.
And he was as quiet as quiet could be.

by Maude Burnam

The Owl in the Barn

A little boy went into a barn
And lay down on some hay
An owl came out and flew about
And the little boy ran away.

by Kay Cooper

The Wise Old Owl

The wise old owl
Sat on an oak
The more he saw
The less he spoke
The more he spoke
The less he heard
Why can't we all
Be like that wise old bird?

Wise-Eyed Owl

The wide-eyed owl has a long pointed nose.
And two pointed ears and claws for his toes.
When that owl looks at you, he flaps his wings
And says, "Whoo, Hoo-Hoo, Whoo-Whoo!"

Haiku

Pelicans at sea
Giant cups with wings
Fish peek out each side.

The Reason for the Pelican

The reason for the pelican
Is difficult to see;
His beak is clearly larger
Than there's any need to be.

It's not to bail a boat with-
He doesn't own a boat.
Yet everywhere he takes himself
He has that beak to tote.

It's not to keep his wife in-
His wife has got one, too.
It's not a scoop for eating soup.
It's not an extra shoe.

It isn't quite for anything.
And yet you realize
It's really quite a splendid beak
In quite a splendid size.

by John Ciardi

A Hatchling's Song

I'm almost hatched! I'm almost hatched!
I'm small, I'm wet, I'm not out yet.
I'm almost hatched!
I'm pecking hard, I'm pecking hard.
I'm tired, I'm weak, it hurts my beak.
I'm pecking hard.
My head's outside, my head's outside.
The moon is bright - the world's so white!
My head's outside.
I'm really hatched, I'm really hatched.
At last I'm free. Hey, Dad, it's me!
I'm really hatched.

A Penguin

A penguin, when he goes somewhere
Will walk or swim; here's why:
Although he has two bird-like wings
He simply cannot fly!

Enigma Sartorial

Consider the penguin
He's smart as can be
Dressed in his dinner clothes
Permanently
You never can tell
When you see him about
If he's just coming in
Or just going out!

by Lucy W. Rhu

Five Little Penguins

Five little penguins, once I knew
Short ones, fat ones, skinny ones too
But the one little penguin with the red bow tie
He led the others sliding up and down
He led the others sliding up and down.

Five Royal Penguins

One royal penguin nothing much to do
Called for his brother and then there were two
Two royal penguins as happy as could be
Called for their sister then there were three
Three royal penguins wished there were more
Called for their mother then there were four
Four royal penguins learning how to dive
Called for their father then there were five
One, two, three, four, f-i-v-e.

by Bernice Wells Carlson

How Much Is That Penguin (tune of How Much is That Doggie)

How much is that penguin in the window
The one in the black and white suit
How much is that penguin in the window
I do think that penguin is cute.

I'm a Little Penguin (tune of I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little penguin on the ice
I think cold is very nice
I can hop around first once, then twice
I think ice is very nice

My Father's Feet

To keep myself up off the ice,
I find my father's feet are nice.
I snuggle in his belly fluff,
And that's how I stay warm enough.
But when my father takes a walk,
My cozy world begins to rock.
He shuffles left, I hold on tight.
Oh no! He's wobbling to the right.
Not left again! Oops, here he goes.
Do you suppose my father knows
I'm hanging on to his warm toes?

by Judy Sierra

Penguin

The penguin's a bird
That cannot fly
But can swim like a torpedo
It looks so nice
Dressed in its own tuxedo

Penguin's First Swim

Ten little penguins all in a line-
One jumps in, and now there are nine.
Nine little penguins, how they hesitate-
One tumbles in, and now there are eight.
Eight little penguins pushin' and shovin'-
One slides in, and now there are seven.
Seven little penguins, scarcely more than chicks-
One slips in, and now there are six.
Six little penguins can't decide to dive-
One falls in, and now there are five.
Five little penguins huddle on the shore-
One flops in, and now there are four.
Four little penguins fidget fearfully-
One hops in, and now there are three.
Three little penguins wonder what to do-
One rolls in, and now there are two ...
Two little penguins missing all the fun-
They both leap in and now there are ...
Ten little penguins, brave as they can be,
Splashing in the waves of the salty southern sea.

by Judy Sierra

Three Little Penguins

Three little penguins dressed in white and black
Waddle, waddle forward and waddle right back.
Three little penguins in a funny pose
Are all dressed up in their evening clothes.
Their suits are black and their vests are white.
They waddle to the left and the waddle to the right.
They stand on the ice and they look very neat
As they waddle along on their little flat feet.

A Robin

I wonder how a robin hears?
I never yet have seen his ears
But I have seen him tip his head
And pull a worm right out of bed.

Baby Robins

Five baby robins watch Daddy Robin soar
One baby leaves the nest and now there are four
Four baby robins, high up in a tree
One flies to catch a worm and now there are three
Three baby robins had nothing to do
One tried his new found wing and then there were two
Two baby robins frolicked in the sun
Another robin chased a bug and then there was one
One baby robin left all alone
And this baby robin decided to stay home!

Diet of Robins

To say that worms are edible
Will seem to you incredible.
For you to eat a measuring worm,
Would take more courage and determination than to take a dive
into a clump of poison ivy.
Yet robins eat them every day;
They smack their beaks and shout Hooray!
They gobble them with joy and pride
And do not seem upset inside.

The moral here is plain to see:
What pleases you does not please me;"
What pleases me to you is hateful,
And for this fact we should be grateful.

by Walter R. Brooks
(see Reply from a Robin below)

Five Little Robins

Five little robins up in a tree
Father, mother, and babies three
Father caught a worm
Mother caught a bug
This one got the bug
This one got the worm
This one said, now it's my turn!

Little Robin Redbreast

Little Robin Redbreast sat upon a tree.
Up went the pussy cat and down went he.
Down came Pussy and away Robin ran.
Says little Robin Redbreast, "Catch me if you can."
Little Robin Redbreast jumped upon a wall.
Pussy cat jumped after him and almost had a fall.
Little Robin chirped and sang and what did Pussy say?"
Pussy cat said, "Mew," and Robin ran away.

Reply from a Robin

To say that worms are edible may seem to you incredible,
And yet I most emphatically assert
That hardly any dishes are more filling or deliciouser
Than angleworms pulled freshly from the dirt.

by Walter R. Brooks

Robin

Little Robin Redbreast,
Sat upon a rail.
Niddle-naddle went his head,
Wiggle-waggle went his tail.

Robin Red Breast

Way up high, little robin flying just so
Quick down low for a worm he must go
With a wing on the left and a wing on the right
Fly to your nest for soon it will be night

The Bird's Nest

I know a place, in the ivy on a tree
Where a bird's nest is and the eggs are three
And the bird is brown, and the eggs are blue
And the twigs are old but the moss is new
And I go quite near, though I think I should have heard
The sound of me watching, if I had been a bird

by John Drinkwater

The Little Robin

There was a little robin
Whose head was always bobbin'
Who said, as he gobbled up a worm,
"I have swallowed all your brothers
And thirty-seven others
And goodness how they tickle
When they squirm."

Robin

When a robin cocks his head
Sideways in a flower bed
He can hear the tiny sound
Of a worm beneath the ground

by Flint Public Library

The North Wind

The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will the robin do then?
Poor thing.
He'll sit in a barn,
To keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing,
Poor thing.

Ocean Diners

They open up their beaks and throats
For breakfast off the back of boats.
Some take a dip and dive for brunch,
Some join the passengers for lunch-
Or swoop in low for sneak attacks
On things like peanut butter snacks.
And when they're in a hungry mood,
Sea gulls love your finger food!

by J. Patrick Lewis

Ten White Seagulls

Ten white seagulls, just see them fly.
Over the mountain, and up to the sky.
Ten white seagulls crying aloud.
Spread out their wings, and fly over a cloud.
Ten white seagulls on a bright day.
Pretty white seagulls, fly, fly away!

Five Little Sparrows

Five little sparrows high in a tree
The first one said, whom do I see?
The second one said, I see the street.
The third one said, and seeds to eat.
The fourth one said, the seeds are wheat.
The fifth one said, tweet, tweet, tweet.

White Swan

Come pretty swan,
Swimming over the lake.
I've brought you some bread crumbs,
And small bits of cake.
Take care, pretty swan!
Swim, swim away!
There's a great big crocodile coming this way.
Snip, snap, go his jaws. He is frightful to see.
But he'll never catch you!
And he'll never catch me!

Peckin'

The saddest thing I ever did see
Was a woodpecker peckin' at a plastic tree.
He looks at me, and "Friend," says he,
"Things ain't as sweet as they used to be."

by Shel Silverstein

Tap Tap Tap

Tap, tap, tap goes the woodpecker
As he pecks a hole in a tree.
He is making a house with a window
To peep at you and me.
